I am a graduate of Northwestern University with a Master of Music Degree in Music Performance. My undergraduate degree is in Music Education from Furman University in Greenville, SC.  I am currently pursuing a Doctorate in Music Education from the University of Georgia.

I currently am in my 11th year teaching at Fannin County High School as band director and my 21st year of teaching all together. I previously taught 10 years in South Carolina. My wife (Julie Barnstead) is the band director at Fannin County Middle School. We love being a part of this wonderful community and could not imagine raising a family anywhere else.

In addition to teaching, I still enjoy performing in musical groups on a regular basis. I have performed with the American Wind Symphony of Pittsburgh, PA, the Charlotte Queen City Brass Band, The Millar Brass Ensemble of Chicago, the Charlotte Philharmonic, The Charlotte Repertoire Orchestra, The Old English Wind Ensemble, the Palmetto Concert Band, Embassy Brass Quintet of Columbia, and the Northwinds Symphonic Band of Gainesville, GA. I am currently a member of the Young Harris Big Band (jazz band), The Backsliders (a local trombone quartet), and I enjoy playing drumset in the praise band at Blue Ridge United Methodist Church for the Contemporary Service. I am also enjoying playing banjo when I can find the time!

I have previously served on the music faculty at Young Harris College and
Lander University in Greenwood, SC. My current professional affiliations include the Georgia Music Education Association, The National Band Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the Georgia Chapter of Phi Beta Mu.

Outside of teaching I enjoy mountain biking, running, and CrossFit. I am also a pilot and enjoy flying when the opportunity arises.
