Graduation Coach

I am the oldest of three children, the only girl, and born on my father’s birthday. We moved several times, but finally ended up in Marion, Indiana, where I graduated from high school, went to Purdue University, and graduated with a degree in elementary education. After I graduated we moved to Atlanta where I taught second grade and my husband worked for the YMCA. We spent 2 summers at the YMCA camp near Brasstown Bald and fell in love with the mountains. We bought property in Mineral Bluff, built our own home, and moved to the mountains to teach school. I taught first grade in Morganton and my husband taught biology at Fannin High.

When my daughter Laurel was born, I stayed home and enjoyed being “mom.” Gradually I became involved in adult literacy in our area and helped found the FLAG Adult Education program. I worked for Appalachian Technical College for 15 years as the adult literacy director for Fannin County. When the graduation coach position was created, it sounded like the perfect job for me. I wanted to work to keep students in high school. This is my twelfth year at Fannin High doing a job that I love.
